Surprisingly, the earliest automobiles were very big to accommodate the big engines. However, the power generated was not very high and the car was primarily used for moving persons from one place to another.
However, as the automobile revolution caught up, the idea of using automobiles to transport goods became more feasible. Steam engines were first used in trucks. To this extent, concept of powering trucks with powerful engines is borrowed from railroads. The invention of gasoline engines and the problems associated with steam engines led to installation of gas engines in trucks. However, gasoline engines were not suitable for long distances. It did not generate sufficient power and was expensive to maintain.
This is where the diesel engines became very popular. Diesel engines were already in use in ships and in factories where cheap power was required. It was only in the 1920's that diesel engines were fitted to trucks. How does a big truck engine differ as compared to car engines? Diesel engines made it possible for trucks to be fully loaded with goods and products and yet run at speeds in excess of forty miles per hour without any safety or performance issues. What is more, the same engine could be used over long distances on a regular basis. Steam engines were cheaper but had many security issues. Gasoline engines were expensive to maintain and would not last long. For a truck, diesel engines were the best option because the power generated by a diesel engine was far more than that generated by a petrol engine.
For very long time, truck engines were considered synonymous with diesel engines. However, the late 80's and early 90's saw huge investment in research and development in the automobile industry. The trucking industry was not an exception to this rule. Ways were found to improve the efficiency of diesel engines. Additives were made to the fuel to improve engine maintenance. Power chargers and turbo chargers were used to improve the power generated by the truck engine. However, the idea of using electrical engines in trucks has not become popular. Electrical engines are yet to find a firm footing even in the passenger car sector. Although it may be cheaper over long distances considering the cost of fuel today, reliability and power generation are serious issues that are yet to be resolved. Further, the idea of using fuel cells to power trucks install of gasoline motor engines is on the cards. However, this technology is still in its development stage. It will be a long time before hundreds and thousands start running on fuel cells. Until then, gas and diesel engines shall continue to remain popular.
